Tanga Region is one of the 30 regions of Tanzania. Its Regional Headquarters is in Tanga. Tanga region is situated at the extreme north-east corner of Tanzania between 40 and 60 degrees below the Equator and 370-39010′ degrees East of the Greenwich meridian.

The region occupies an area of 27,347sq kms, being only 3% of total area of the country.The region is bordered to the north by Kenya and Kilimanjaro Region, to the East by the Indian Ocean, to the South by Pwani and Morogoro regions, and to the West by Manyara Region.The Region was previously known as Tanga Province, which, however, included the Same and Mwanga districts which are at present in Kilimanjaro Region.

Administratively, Tanga Region is divided into eight districts: Tanga, Muheza, Korogwe, Lushoto, Handeni, Pangani and kilindi. The region has a total of 37 divisions. 136 wards and 557 villages. The Regional Administrative Secretary is the Chief Executive in the region assisted by District Executive Directors at district level and other functional officers; while the Regional Commissioner is the administrative overseer and represents the President in the region. The region has a land area of 27,348sq kms, of which total area available for agricultural activities is 17,000sq kms only.

Districts of Tanga

Tanga Urban and Rural

Tanga is one of eleven administrative districts of Tanga Region in Tanzania. The District covers an area of 596.5 km². Tanga district is bordered to the north by Mkinga District, to the east by the Indian Ocean, to the south and west by Muheza District.

Korogwe District

Korogwe District also known as Korogwe District Council is one of the eleven districts of Tanga Region in Tanzania. The District covers an area of 6,534 km². It is bordered to the northeast by the Lushoto District and north by Bumbuli District.

Muheza District

Muheza is one of eleven administrative districts of Tanga Region in Tanzania. The District covers an area of 1,498 km². It is bordered to the north by Mkinga District, to the east by Tanga and the Indian Ocean, to the south by the Pangani District and Handeni District.

Handeni District

Handeni District is one of the 11 districts of Tanga Region in Tanzania. The District covers an area of 6,534 km². It is bordered to the west by the Kilindi District and the Handeni Urban District, to the north by the Korogwe District, to the east by the Pangani District.

Lushoto District

Lushoto is one of the eleven districts of Tanga Region in Tanzania. It is bordered to the northeast by Kenya, to the east by the Muheza District, to the northwest by the Kilimanjaro Region, west by Korogwe District and to the south by the Bumbuli District.

Pangani District

Pangani District is one of the eight districts and one of 11 administrative councils in Tanga Region in north eastern Tanzania. As of the 2012 census, the population was Pangani district was 54,025, making it the least populous district in Tanga region.

YES! Tanga Town is an old town on the coast of Northern Tanzania which is along the coast of Indian Ocean near the border with Kenya. The town itself gives a good experience of Tanzanian culture and it is well worth visiting the markets.

Most of western Tanga is home to the Zigula people, the majority in Handeni District. The Sambaa, the largest ethic group in Tanga Region are mostly found in the northern Tanga Region in the western Usambaras, Lushoto district, western Korogwe District and northern Muheza district.

Mkomazi National Park, which is located in northeastern Tanzania on the Kenyan border, in Kilimanjaro Region and Tanga Region. It was established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to a national park in 2006.

It is 116 km from Mkomazi National Park to Tanga. It is approximately 150.7 km to drive.

The distance between Kilimanjaro and Tanga is 294 km.
